The Greek government is investing over €1 billion to address the critical need for student housing, particularly in major urban centers like Athens, Thessaloniki, and Crete. This ambitious initiative aims to alleviate the housing crisis faced by students, which has led to high rental costs and the exclusion of many from affordable accommodation. The focus is on upgrading and expanding student halls, with a particular emphasis on older, neglected properties.
One notable project is the development of student halls in Crete, with the Aktor Group as the contractor. This project will result in 1,810 apartments in Rethymno and 1,016 apartments in Iraklio, providing a total of 2,710 beds. These new accommodations will significantly contribute to meeting the housing needs of students in the region.
The investment extends beyond new constructions. A substantial €226 million program has been allocated for the renovation of 15 student residence buildings across Athens, Thessaloniki, Ioannina, Patra, and Komotini. This initiative aims to accommodate 5,600 students and increase the capacity of these buildings by 36%. However, the state's chronic neglect of student housing is evident, as 90% of these properties were built before 1985, with many in dire need of repair.
In Greater Athens, specific attention is being given to the student residence of the University of Athens on Olof Palme Street and the ASPAITE residence in Maroussi. Additionally, the National Technical University of Athens plans to spend around €50 million on the renovation of 450 beds in the Zografou area, with a PPP tender recently announced for the total reconstruction of the existing building within the university campus.
Another significant PPP project in Greater Athens involves the construction of the first newly built complex of student residences after the 1980s. This project, on behalf of the University of West Attica, will create 1,100 residences. These initiatives collectively demonstrate the government's commitment to addressing the housing crisis faced by students across the country.
