Asheville Drivers Brace for Extended Wait Times Amid Major Road Updates!
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Transportation officials have recently provided significant updates regarding major road construction projects that are set to affect traffic flow throughout Asheville. The most notable news is that drivers will need to exercise a bit more patience as they wait for improvements.
Billion-Dollar I-26 Connector Project Includes Eight-Lane Highway Flyover: According to Nathan Moneyham from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), the much-anticipated widening of Interstate 26 is now projected to be completed by 2027. This information was disclosed during a meeting of the Council of Independent Business Owners on Friday, December 9.
Officials highlighted the considerable progress made so far, including grading work on the new interchange at Exit 35, which will create a vital connection between I-26 and Highway 191.
However, this addition has contributed to delays in the project timeline. Moneyham emphasized its importance, stating, "As the area continues to grow, addressing traffic congestion at Long Shoals and Brevard Road is crucial. This enhancement is a key component of the project that allows us to efficiently complete all necessary work in that region simultaneously."
NCDOT to Reassess Controversial I-26 Flyover Plan: In addition to the I-26 widening project, NCDOT also provided updates on the broader I-26 Connector initiative, which involves constructing a new bridge over the French Broad River near downtown Asheville, along with widening segments of both Interstate 240 and I-26 from Haywood Road to Broadway. Construction on this expansive project is anticipated to commence in the upcoming summer.
Moneyham revealed, "The total cost is slightly over one billion dollars, and we expect to wrap up by the fall of 2031."
Transition from Traditional Widening to Express Toll Lane for I-40: Furthermore, Tristian Winkler from the French Broad Metropolitan Planning Organization shared insights about a shift in strategy for the previously planned widening of Interstate 40 from Asheville to Clyde. Instead of pursuing the traditional widening approach, the focus has now shifted toward the development of an express toll lane.
"This idea has been on the table for several years but has not received sufficient funding to proceed with construction," Winkler explained regarding the initial widening project. He expressed optimism that redefining the project would enhance its prospects for securing funding while also alleviating costs for taxpayers. However, it will still take an additional year and a half to determine if this revised plan will ultimately receive approval for implementation.
