Imagine this: the biggest names in cyclocross, Mathieu van der Poel, Wout Van Aert, and Thibau Nys, all take a break, leaving a void in the upcoming Gullegem Superprestige race. But here's where it gets interesting... the organizers decided to go big and try to lure a true superstar, Tadej Pogačar, to their event!
Pogačar, a cycling legend in the making, has shown his skills off-road, even claiming the Slovenian national championship in cyclocross back in 2019. He's got the talent and the passion, but his road racing commitments have always kept him from fully embracing his off-road dreams.
"It's a simple case of his team not allowing it. Otherwise, he'd be racing cyclocross right now," an insider revealed.
So, the Gullegem organizers took a shot, reaching out to Pogačar's agent, Alex Carera. But, unfortunately, their efforts were in vain, as Pogačar was already committed to a training camp with his team, UAE Team Emirates-XRG.
"We went looking for a star, a real cycling superstar, and that description fits Tadej Pogačar perfectly," Stijn Tant, one of the organizers, admitted. "We thought, why not try? But in the end, we got a no, as Pogačar's schedule didn't allow for it."
But the organizers weren't going to let a little setback stop them from putting on a great show. They've lined up a series of DJs and musicians to keep the party going long after the racing has finished. They've even built a unique après-ski-style wooden cow shed, a 'Kuhstall,' to create a one-of-a-kind post-race atmosphere.
So, while Pogačar won't be there, the Gullegem Superprestige is still set to be a memorable event, with or without the cycling superstar.
And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about the riders; it's about the entire experience. The organizers are creating an atmosphere that blends cyclocross with après-ski, offering a unique twist to the traditional race format.
