In the heart of the Australian Outback, a Catholic priest is making waves by blending sacred rituals with rock 'n' roll. Father Oche Matutina, an Indonesian missionary, has swapped his traditional pulpit for an electric guitar, creating a unique fusion of faith and music. His journey began with a childhood dominated by heavy metal music, inspired by icons like Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Metallica. Encouraged by a father who crafted guitars, Father Matutina dreamed of becoming a rock star, entertaining his local community with his band. However, a pivotal conversation with a German priest who hummed while wearing his habit sparked a change in his aspirations. The priest told him, 'You can be a priest and play music. You can do more through music.' This led him to join the seminary at 17, initially toning down his heavy metal influences as some superiors found it unbecoming. But his love for music remained, and he continued to play classic rock, country, and blues. Upon arriving in Australia, Father Matutina discovered a cultural shift. While people in Indonesia eagerly discuss faith, Australians often shy away from religious conversations. This realization made him appreciate his passion for music even more, using it as a bridge to connect with others. His innovative approach has paid off, drawing larger crowds to Sunday mass. Attendance has skyrocketed from three to five people to sometimes 30 to 50 people in the pews. But Father Matutina is aware that most of the parish never sets foot in the church. So, he took his music beyond the church walls, forming a covers band called Yellowbelly with local guitarists and a drummer. The band travels throughout north-western NSW and southern Queensland, playing in pubs, community events, and wherever people gather. To his Aboriginal bandmates, his role as a Catholic priest from Indonesia is normal. They see him as one of their own, emphasizing his inclusivity and lack of religious pressure. He has even gained a following, with girls shouting 'Father! Father!' as his car drives by.
