Honduras Election Drama: Trump's Interference, Alleged Electoral Coup, and Drug Trafficking Scandal (2026)

A brewing storm in Honduras: President Xiomara Castro alleges an 'electoral coup' is underway, sparking controversy and raising questions about foreign interference. This situation is more complex than it seems. Let's break it down.

President Castro is accusing the former US President Donald Trump of meddling in the Honduran presidential election. She claims this is an 'electoral coup,' suggesting the integrity of the vote is being undermined. She emphasized that Honduras' sovereignty is non-negotiable and democracy should not be compromised.

The election itself has been a rollercoaster. Since the November 30th polls, the vote count has been plagued by delays and technical issues on the electoral council's website. The race is incredibly tight. Two right-wing candidates, Nasry “Tito” Asfura and Salvador Nasralla, are neck and neck. With 99.4% of the preliminary results in, Asfura is slightly ahead with 40.52%, while Nasralla follows closely with 39.48%. The margin? A mere 42,000 votes.

Here's where it gets controversial: Asfura received open support from Trump, who stated the US would back the next government only if Asfura won. Trump also pardoned former President Juan Orlando Hernández, an ally of Asfura, who had been sentenced to 45 years in prison for allegedly facilitating drug trafficking.

President Castro has condemned Trump's actions, claiming they are a violation of Honduras's sovereignty. She also stated that Trump's statements threatened the Honduran people, suggesting consequences if they voted for Rixi Moncada, a candidate from the Liberal party, who was chosen by Castro to run in her place. Before the vote, Trump had labeled Moncada a communist, claiming her victory would hand the country to the Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro. Moncada is currently in third place with 19.29% of the votes.

But here's a point that could spark debate: Castro has also referred to Hernández's release, stating that conservatives in Washington have allied themselves with drug trafficking and organized crime. Hernández was convicted in the US last year after allegations that Honduras, under his leadership from 2014 to 2022, was a key transit point for cocaine.

Adding another layer of complexity, the Honduran attorney general, an ally of Castro's government, has ordered the immediate execution of an international arrest warrant for Hernández.

President Castro has alleged the election is marred by threats, coercion, and manipulation, although she hasn't provided concrete evidence. She intends to bring these concerns to international bodies like the United Nations and the Organization of American States. The runner-up, Nasralla, is also claiming fraud and demanding a recount. The president of the electoral council, Ana Paola Hall, has stated she will not tamper with the results. With approximately 14.5% of the tally sheets showing inconsistencies, the official result is expected by December 30th.
