Jack Wolfe on Playing Orpheus in Hadestown Broadway Interview (2026)

Get ready for a thrilling journey into the world of Broadway and the captivating show, Hadestown! We're about to dive into an exclusive interview with Jack Wolfe, the talented actor who brings Orpheus to life on stage. But here's where it gets controversial... Wolfe's journey to Broadway is an inspiring tale of dreams coming true, and his interpretation of Orpheus will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about this iconic role.

In a cozy Walter Kerr Theatre, Wolfe shares his experiences and the unique challenges of playing Orpheus. From his early days in Wakefield to his debut in Hadestown, Wolfe's story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the magic of Broadway.

"The idea of moving to New York for any chapter in my life was sort of unbelievable." Wolfe confesses, "Growing up, I never imagined I'd get to perform in London, let alone on Broadway!"

But his journey didn't stop there. Wolfe's chance encounter with the Hadestown cast and his secret pact with a friend to see the show worldwide led to an unforgettable experience. He even got to meet the stars, Eva Noblezada and Reeve Carney!

"I love how Hadestown has maintained its integrity over the years. It's a show that continues to draw people in with its raw, underdog quality and unique poetry." Wolfe shares his admiration for the show's enduring appeal.

When it comes to connecting with Orpheus, Wolfe reveals, "There are infinite ways to play this role." He credits the trust given by director Rachel Chavkin and associate director Keenan Tyler Oliphant for allowing him to make the role his own while honoring the vision.

"The wonderful thing about Hadestown is that I continue to discover new ideas and choices as I perform it." Wolfe explains, adding, "There are parts of myself that I find reflected in Orpheus, especially when it comes to exploring the idea of human cost."

Wolfe's interpretation of Orpheus as a nervous performer, struggling with sharing his gift, adds a layer of depth and tension to the character. "It creates a compelling tension to play with as an actor," he says.

But how does Wolfe keep his voice in shape for such a vocally challenging role? "The music fits me well; it's close to the indie folk genre I love." He credits his incredible singing teachers, Sam Kenyon and Mike Ruckles, for helping him sustain eight shows a week.

"Calming down and relaxing are just as essential as physically warming up," Wolfe shares, quoting actress Georgina Onuorah. "Trusting your work and enjoying the show is key."

When asked about his favorite musical moment in Hadestown, Wolfe gushes about performing "Epic III." He loves the vulnerability of the moment and the opportunity to inhabit a wonderful dramatic role. "It's exciting to sing something so fluid and changeable," he adds.

Wolfe also raves about his co-star, Morgan Dudley, calling her one of the most wonderful artists he's ever worked with. "Her voice is astounding, and she's such a force."

As for the swinging lights during "Wait For Me," Wolfe admits, "For the first couple of shows, it was 'Please don't let these lights hit my head!' But now, it's a powerful moment. I feel connected to those who sang it before me, like I'm part of a tapestry of Orpheuses."

Playing guitar on stage directly influenced Wolfe's interpretation of Orpheus. "It aided my portrayal, especially with the idea that he can't be a confident sharer of his music." He continues, "Now I feel confident with the guitar, but I like the character I built, so I continue that version."

Having the band on stage is a wonderful experience, Wolfe shares. "We've grown close, and I'll often reference people in the band during the show. It's a lot of fun!"

When asked about his TV show, Shadow and Bone, Wolfe reveals, "I learned that the best work comes from collaborating like a theater company. Theater is about serving the piece, egolessly."

"Shadow and Bone will always be one of the most special parts of my life," he adds.

As for his future in music, Wolfe teases, "There are plans and things afoot. Working with Passenger was wonderful, and he's become a good pal. I've found people who are very giving with their advice, like meeting Anaïs through Hadestown. It has definitely inspired me to do something."

Finally, Wolfe reflects on his time in Hadestown, calling it "the most wonderful company of people." He shares, "The backstage area of the Walter Kerr is one of the most special places on the planet. I hope that when I leave, a bit of me will stay behind."

"Knocking on all the dressing room doors, hanging out with everybody between shows, or watching movies projected on the wall downstairs - I think all of that makes it onto the stage because we all love each other so dearly."

Wolfe's time in Hadestown has been one of his happiest chapters yet, and we're grateful to have had the opportunity to chat with him. If you haven't seen Hadestown, it's a must-see! Tickets are available, and you can keep up with Jack Wolfe on Instagram and TikTok.
