Victory isn’t always defined by trophies. For Jordan Anderson, a top-five finish at Daytona International Speedway became a celebration of something far more precious – family. While the checkered flag eluded him once again, Anderson’s post-race embrace with his wife, Kendall, and their 4 1/2-month-old son, Banks, on pit road was a moment of pure joy, a reminder that success transcends the podium.
Anderson’s near-misses at Daytona have become a familiar wintertime narrative. The 34-year-old South Carolinian, who also owns his racing team, has come tantalizingly close to his first NASCAR national series win before, finishing fourth in this very race two years ago and as a heart-wrenching runner-up in consecutive Craftsman Truck Series openers (2020, 2021). This time, his No. 32 Chevrolet proudly displayed his son’s name and a “baby on board” decal, a testament to the new chapter in his life.
And this is the part most people miss... While Austin Hill’s dominant performance in the No. 21 Richard Childress Racing Chevy stole the headlines, Anderson’s fight for the lead on the final lap was a testament to his grit and the strength of his team. “I thought the seas were getting ready to part,” Anderson recalled, his voice tinged with both excitement and the bittersweetness of another close call. “But it just wasn’t meant to be.”
Yet, for Anderson, this fourth-place finish was more than just a result. It was a validation of years of hard work, of building a team from the ground up. “Not bad for a part-time guy,” he quipped, his pride evident. “Our team worked so hard all offseason... We’re committed to this sport, and we want to get better every year.”
But here’s where it gets controversial... Is Anderson’s focus on family a distraction from his racing ambitions, or is it the secret to his resilience? Some might argue that the pressures of fatherhood could hinder his performance, but Anderson sees it as a source of motivation. “Being a dad has put a whole new perspective on my life,” he shared. “I can have a tough day at the shop, but coming home to his smile makes everything right.”
The family celebration on pit road was almost overshadowed by another life-changing event. Jordan’s father, Clif, had flown in at the last minute, only to receive a text from his daughter announcing she was going into labor with his third grandchild. “Three reasons to be proud,” Clif said, wearing a ballcap proudly declaring him Banks’ grandfather.
Jordan Anderson Racing, once a single-truck operation, has expanded to three full-time O’Reilly Auto Parts Series entries, thanks in part to a technical alliance with Richard Childress Racing. Yet, on this day, family took center stage. “He won’t remember this one,” Anderson said of his son, “but one day, it’ll be something him and I can talk about and have some good memories from.”
