A major winter storm has left tens of thousands of people in the dark, and the situation is far from over. The aftermath of the blizzard has revealed a complex power restoration process, with varying impacts across New Jersey and New York.
As of Monday afternoon, the number of residents without power was still staggering. The utilities' struggle to restore electricity became more apparent as the day progressed, with some companies reporting an increasing number of customers without service. But here's the catch: the restoration timeline remains uncertain.
New Jersey, especially North and Central Jersey, bore the brunt of the storm's impact. Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L) reported over 73,000 customers without electricity, a number that continued to rise throughout the day. The Jersey Shore, Monmouth, and Ocean counties were hit hard, with nearly a third of customers in Burlington County also affected. JCP&L workers made significant progress, reconnecting 30,000 customers in just four hours, but strong winds and fallen trees caused most of the outages.
In New York, Long Island and the Rockaways were the epicenters of power disruptions. PSEG Long Island reported more than 12,000 customers without power, while Con Edison had approximately 3,700 customers in the dark across the five boroughs and Westchester County. The utilities cited wind and road salt mixing with melting snow as primary causes.
And this is where it gets controversial: the response to the crisis. New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill highlighted the efforts of utility workers, with 5,000 on the ground, some recruited from out of state. But the question remains: could more have been done to prepare for and mitigate the power outages?
