A medical issue aboard the International Space Station has prompted NASA to consider an early return for the Crew-11 astronauts, raising concerns about astronaut health in space. This unexpected development has put a spotlight on the challenges of long-duration space missions.
NASA announced that a crew member is experiencing a medical issue, leading to the postponement of a scheduled spacewalk. The agency has not disclosed the identity of the astronaut or the specific nature of the medical concern, citing privacy reasons. However, they did confirm the crew member is in stable condition.
The situation arose on Wednesday, January 7th, and NASA is now actively evaluating all options, including the possibility of bringing Crew-11 back to Earth sooner than planned. NASA emphasized that ensuring the safety of their missions is their top priority, and they are prepared for such scenarios.
The spacewalk, originally planned for two astronauts, was meant to involve ISS commander Mike Fincke and flight engineer Zena Cardman. The task included upgrading the power system by installing equipment and routing cables for a future solar array. This would have been Zena's first spacewalk and Mike's 10th, making him the sixth U.S. astronaut to achieve this milestone. Mike has spent over 48 hours outside the ISS, showcasing his extensive experience.
Crew-11 also includes Kimiya Yui from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and Oleg Platonov, a Roscosmos cosmonaut. The team launched into low-Earth orbit on August 1st from the Kennedy Space Center.
Also currently on the ISS are NASA astronaut Chris Williams and cosmonauts Sergey Mikaev and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, who arrived on Thanksgiving aboard a Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft.
But here's where it gets controversial... This isn't the only recent health-related incident involving NASA astronauts. In October 2024, the four members of NASA Crew-8 were taken to a hospital for evaluation after their Dragon spacecraft splashed down. One astronaut stayed overnight for observation.
In August 2021, a spacewalk was postponed due to a minor medical issue experienced by astronaut Mark Vande Hei.
And this is the part most people miss... Looking ahead, NASA is planning to launch Crew-12 on February 15th for another long-duration mission to the ISS. This crew includes NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. They will also launch aboard a SpaceX Dragon and Falcon 9 from Cape Canaveral.
