After a candid meeting with the players on Sunday, McLellan and his coaching staff opted to skip practice on the ice. They communicated their message effectively, and the Wings appeared rejuvenated as they took to the ice in Denver. McLellan commented, "We had a straightforward discussion, which our group needed. We chose to forgo skating the next day because something felt off during that previous game. We looked sluggish and flat. Perhaps a rest day was what we needed, and when we skated before the game on Monday, we looked significantly more alert."
With this victory, the Red Wings, now holding a record of 33 wins, 18 losses, and 6 overtime losses for a total of 72 points, ended a three-game winless streak (0-2-1) and closed in on the Atlantic Division leader, Tampa Bay, who is just two points ahead. This win also ended an eight-game losing streak in Denver, where the Wings hadn’t won since 2016. Furthermore, it was their first regulation win over the Avalanche in 16 games.
The Avalanche, currently leading the NHL standings with 36 wins, 9 losses, and 9 overtime losses for 81 points, suffered only their third home regulation loss of the season, boasting an impressive record of 20 wins, 3 losses, and 4 overtime losses at home.
Gibson remarked on the teamwork displayed, saying, "It was a fantastic team effort from top to bottom. Gibson noted, "We anticipated they would ramp up their efforts in the third period. They are a skilled team that often makes a push during that time. Early in the match, Colorado defenseman Devon Toews attempted an ill-fated pinch from the point, which allowed Raymond and Kasper to break out on a two-on-one rush. Raymond skillfully set up Kasper, who easily tapped the puck into the net past goalie Mackenzie Blackwood, who had committed to the other side. This marked Kasper's sixth goal, bringing his point total to seven over the last nine games.
Kasper emphasized the importance of a strong start, especially after recent subpar performances: "It was crucial to come out strong, particularly following our previous games where we didn’t showcase our best. We had discussed the need to start well and avoid giving them too much respect. It was a great play by Lucas, and all I had to do was put my stick down."
