Former NFL quarterback Brock Huard highlights another critical advantage: the opportunity for the Seahawks' assistant coaches to focus solely on game preparation without the distraction of head-coaching interviews.
The Impact of Coaching Interviews: A Double-Edged Sword
According to Huard, the NFL's rules on interviewing coaches from playoff teams have given the Seahawks an additional upper hand. Offensive Coordinator Klint Kubiak and Defensive Coordinator Aden Durde, having received a first-round bye, were available for virtual interviews last week, which they completed by the weekend.
However, the 49ers' Defensive Coordinator Robert Saleh, due to his team's wild-card round participation, couldn't start his interviews until this week, creating a challenging situation where he must juggle interview preparations with game planning against the Seahawks.
Huard draws a parallel to the Oregon Ducks' experience in the College Football Playoff semifinals, where their coordinators, having accepted head-coaching roles elsewhere, were distracted during the team's run. This resulted in a lopsided loss to the Hoosiers, a team they had previously defeated.
"When you've got those split interests, it's human nature to be affected," Huard explains. "The energy and time required for these interviews can't help but impact performance."
While Huard believes Saleh's prior head-coaching experience may mitigate some of the stress, the added responsibility of preparing for the Seahawks simultaneously creates a unique challenge.
"Saleh's interviews are probably manageable, but combining them with game planning is a different beast entirely," Huard adds.
Head Coach Mike Macdonald also acknowledges the advantage, stating, "It's fortunate we had the bye. The teams going into interviews this week have a significantly tougher task, having to shift their focus and still stay in tune with game planning."
