A looming disaster in St. Mary's has residents on edge, with evacuation orders issued due to a severely damaged fish sauce plant. The situation is critical, and here's why: a dilapidated fish sauce plant, already battered by high winds, poses a significant threat to nearby residents.
Last week, strong winds caused one side of the abandoned building, which houses vats of putrefying fish sauce, to completely collapse. The mayor has warned that the entire structure is on the verge of falling apart.
But here's where it gets controversial... The town council held an emergency meeting on Sunday, and after careful consideration, they decided that the risk of flying debris from the unstable building was too high, especially with wind gusts expected to reach up to 100 km/h on Monday afternoon and evening. As a precaution, residents closest to the plant are being advised to evacuate.
Town officials are closely monitoring the situation. Mayor Steve Ryan has been actively communicating with various government levels, including Municipal Affairs Minister Chris Tibbs. The provincial government has assured the council of its commitment to address the issue and is providing full support, according to a post on the town’s Facebook page.
A follow-up meeting with government officials is scheduled for Monday, with further updates expected to be released at that time.
And this is the part most people miss... The potential for environmental contamination from the decaying fish sauce is a serious concern. What are your thoughts? Do you think the government is acting quickly enough? Share your opinions in the comments below!
