Can you believe it? The iconic '60s sitcom, The Addams Family, continues to captivate audiences, even spawning a recent Netflix hit, Wednesday. While countless actors have stepped into the roles of the kooky family, from Morticia to Gomez, the original ABC series cast remains legendary. But here's a bittersweet fact: almost all of them are gone, leaving just one survivor: John Astin.
Astin, most famously known for his portrayal of the suave patriarch Gomez Addams, is the sole remaining member of the original cast. At over 90 years young, Astin boasts an impressive career spanning film, television, and animation. He's even revisited the world of the Addams Family multiple times, solidifying the show's place as one of the best TV series of the '60s.
Astin was 34 when The Addams Family premiered on ABC in September 1964. Before that, he honed his skills on stage, even landing a small role in the film version of West Side Story. Just two years before his Addams breakthrough, he was a lead in the short-lived comedy I'm Dickens, He's Fenster. While that show didn't last, Astin's talent shone through, leading him to his iconic role.
After The Addams Family concluded in 1966, Astin, who later became the adoptive father of Lord of the Rings star Sean Astin, remained a television fixture for decades. He even stepped into Frank Gorshin's shoes as the Riddler in the Adam West-led Batman series and secured recurring roles in shows like Night Gallery, Night Court, and Welcome Back, Kotter.
In 1977, Astin reunited with most of the original cast for the made-for-TV movie Halloween with the New Addams Family. When the franchise experienced a resurgence with the successful 1991 film and its sequel, Astin reprised his role as Gomez Addams in the animated series, simply titled The Addams Family.
Later, he played Grandpapa Addams in two episodes of The New Addams Family, marking his final contribution to the franchise. Since then, Astin has focused on voice work, continuing to thrive well into his 90s. It's truly remarkable!
