The Untold Story: Uganda's Music Legends and Their Brush with the Army (2025)

Imagine nearly having some of Uganda’s most iconic musicians—Jose Chameleone, Bobi Wine, and Bebe Cool—forced into military service as a disciplinary tactic. That’s precisely the startling revelation veteran dancehall artist Buchaman recently shared. And this is the part most people miss: their intense rivalry wasn’t just about music; it escalated into violent clashes that even caught the attention of the country’s top officials.

During an interview with Shalom 256, Buchaman explained that the rivalry between these legendary artists had gone beyond friendly competition. Their confrontations sometimes turned physical, drawing the concern of national leaders who decided to intervene. The president at the time reportedly ordered that if any of them acted out of line, they could be taken to General Saleh, who would then decide whether to enlist them into the army as a form of discipline.

This led to a surprising attempt at reconciliation. General Saleh organized a reunion show, not just to settle their differences but as a symbolic gesture to promote peace among these powerful figures. According to Buchaman, the conflicts had become so fierce that the music scene in Kampala was heavily influenced by gang culture—artists, including himself as part of Firebase Crew, began moving around with their own groups for protection.

Interestingly, Saleh reportedly gave the artists a stark choice: either cool down the gang-related violence or prepare to fight against the notorious Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) leader Joseph Kony. Ultimately, the artists decided to cease their hostilities, leading to the memorable reunion show held at Nile Hotel in 2003.

This story not only sheds light on the turbulent side of Uganda’s music scene but also raises questions about how rivalry and violence can sometimes overshadow artistic expression. Do you think such drastic measures could have been effective or even justified? Or do they highlight deeper issues within the entertainment industry that still need addressing? Share your thoughts—this story is just the tip of the iceberg.
